Happier Camper founder Derek May first fell in love with classic trailers early on, helping his father carefully restore these campers in their backyard in Windsor, Canada.
After founding his first products company in Los Angeles, Derek amassed a small fleet of campers to rent out to other adventurous Angelenos looking to escape the city for a while. He carefully restored these vintage Bolers, Trilliums, and Scamp trailers on a lot near Effie St. in Silverlake, California.
To grow the business further, Derek partnered with his good friend Wil Sarmienti and lifelong childhood pal Ryan Edwards. It wasn't long before the three conceived the Happier Camper brand as you know it today.
BIRTH OF A MODERN CLASSIC
Though the soft-curved lines and manageable size of the retro rental fleet were enjoyable, the static, built-in layouts, appliances, and furniture just weren’t convenient. Applying their experience working in fast-moving, design-focused startups, the three conceptualized a stylish but more adaptable camper which still embraced the awesome midcentury look.
The team knew that success would be found in obsessing over the details, not compromising and only using materials that would last a lifetime, and fostering community with the hundreds of Happier Camper owners.
THE ROAD AHEAD
At their facilities in California and Baja the three founders are continuously focused on providing high-quality, hand-crafted, lightweight campers and systems to intrepid adventurers across the country and beyond.
Happier Camper is always trying to push the bounds of innovation, creation, and production. As such, the products being made now are inspired by and designed for future generations. There are so many incredible products in the works. The adventure is just beginning.
